In Tamil homes across Puducherry, Deepavali begins in the dark. The house is up well before sunrise for the oil bath, new clothes go on, the first sweets are passed round, and the first crackers go off at the gate while the street is still grey.

November or December, in the Tamil month of Karthigai
Karthigai Deepam is the festival of lamps. On the full moon night of Karthigai, rows of clay agal lamps are set along doorsteps, compound walls and window ledges, and not far from Puducherry the great flame is lit on the hill at Tiruvannamalai.

Mid January, over four days from Bhogi to Kaanum Pongal
Pongal is the harvest festival and the biggest family holiday of the Tamil year. Bhogi clears out the old, kolams fill the front of every house, the new rice boils over in the pot at sunrise on Thai Pongal, and on Mattu Pongal the cattle are washed, painted and garlanded.

Mid April, on the first day of Chithirai
Puthandu opens the Tamil year on the first day of Chithirai. A fresh kolam goes down at the door, the family visits the temple, the new panchangam is read, and lunch includes a mango pachadi that is sweet, sour and bitter at once, for the mix of days ahead.

25 December and 31 December
Christmas is a big festival in Pondicherry. Stars hang from balconies across the old town, midnight mass fills the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and the Sacred Heart Basilica, and a week later the whole town seems to walk down to the promenade to see the new year in.

Through the muhurtham season
A Tamil wedding has a few set moments for crackers: the groom's arrival procession the evening before, the muhurtham itself, often early in the morning, and the reception that follows.

Puducherry's temples keep their own calendars. The car festival at Villianur, when the great chariot of the Thirukameswarar temple is pulled through the streets, and the Brahmotsavam of the Manakula Vinayagar temple in the old town are the best known, and every village temple has its thiruvizha.

A grihapravesam is set to a muhurtham, usually early in the morning. The family steps in together, milk is boiled in the new kitchen until it spills over for plenty, and the house has its first celebration.

A first birthday, a sixtieth, or just a big family evening often finishes in the street or on the open ground below the flats once the cake is cut.
