Puthandu crackers at the Sivakasi price
Puthandu opens the Tamil year on the first day of Chithirai. A fresh kolam goes down at the door, the family visits the temple, the new panchangam is read, and lunch includes a mango pachadi that is sweet, sour and bitter at once, for the mix of days ahead.

Why crackers belong to Puthandu
Puthandu is a quiet festival of the home and the temple, not a cracker night. A garland in the morning and some light for the children in the evening is the whole of it.
What to buy
A short list does it. One garland, a few boxes of sparklers and a couple of flower pots. The rest of the minimum order keeps, sealed, for the next festival.
