Think morning and night. A garland and a few sound crackers cover the dawn. For the night, buy more sparklers than seems sensible, a line of flower pots, some ground chakkars and a repeater cake to close. In the town the sparklers always run out before anything else.
Karthigai Deepam crackers
November or December, in the Tamil month of Karthigai
Keep it small and bright. Sparklers, flower pots and a few ground chakkars suit a doorstep lined with lamps. If you are ordering for Deepavali anyway, add these to the same order and store them sealed until Karthigai.
Pongal crackers
Mid January, over four days from Bhogi to Kaanum Pongal
Buy for several small evenings, not one big show. Novelties, chakkars and sparklers for the children, one garland for Bhogi, a couple of bigger pieces for the last night. Keep every cracker well away from the cattle on Mattu Pongal.
Puthandu crackers
Mid April, on the first day of Chithirai
