Bursting crackers in Pondicherry: the 2026 timings
Deepavali falls on 8 November 2026. Here is what is actually permitted in Pondicherry and the rest of Puducherry, and where to check before you buy.

The two-hour window
Bursting in Puducherry is normally notified for 8:00 to 10:00 PM on Deepavali. Outside those hours it is an offence, including on the days either side of Deepavali.
Green crackers only
Puducherry permits certified green crackers alone. Look for the CSIR-NEERI green logo and the QR code printed on the box, and keep the box until you have burst everything in it.
Silence zones
No bursting within 100 metres of a hospital, school, court or place of worship, at any hour. Many streets in Pondicherry sit inside one without a sign.
Your gated community
The apartment blocks of Lawspet and the newer towers along the ECR towards Kalapet often add a rule of their own: bursting only on the open ground, only at a set hour, or never on the terrace and in the parking. Check with your association first.

Can we burst crackers in our apartment complex?
Your association decides that as much as the administration does. Blocks in Lawspet and along the ECR usually name one open space and one hour, and some keep the terraces and parking areas off limits. Ask before you order, not on the night.
What is a silence zone?
The area within 100 metres of a hospital, nursing home, school, court or place of worship. Nothing may be burst there at any hour, and in the old town, with a temple, church or school on so many streets, that covers more ground than you might expect.
What happens if I burst outside the permitted hours?

Can I carry crackers on a PRTC or TNSTC bus?
No. Fireworks are classed as explosives and may not be carried on PRTC or TNSTC buses or sent by ordinary courier. That is why your order travels by registered road transport, booked in your name.
